What is Catch Music?
Catch Music Inc was established in 2007 as a non-profit organisation with the goal of using innovative music activities to bring together members of the community – targeting, in particular, people with a disability, people with mental health illness, and other isolated or disadvantaged members of the community who ordinarily lack access to music-making and other social opportunities.
We are currently running eight community jam sessions across Perth. Our coordination team are all dedicated volunteers, and we have a supporter base of over 400 people.
What is a Catch Music session?
The purpose of our Catch Music sessions is to “create a space” for people of all abilities to come together and make music.
Opportunities for such experiences in our community are rare, although the process of music making in a group is perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of music. With other pursuits, such as sports, dancing, or painting, there are places to go to join a sports team, enjoy social dancing with others, etc. – but, with the exception of community choirs, there are few equivalent places for people who want to participate in amateur-level group music.
Catch Music's community music sessions intentionally aim to embrace a diversity of skills and personalities – to reflect a real representation of the community.

How are our Catch Music sessions run?
The strength of our community jam sessions is that we seek to include people of absolutely all abilities - people who have existing musical skills, people who are just beginning to learn music, and people who have difficulty playing music for other reasons. We run our sessions in such a way that on one hand there are “high musical expectations”, so as to engage those musicians who have skills and want to be challenged musically, and on the other hand the people who don’t have advanced skills are included in the group and supported to participate in a meaningful way.
What's involved in the Music Facilitator role?
Each Music Facilitator is assigned to one Catch Music session, and they are responsible for leading the musical aspect of that group. The majority of our sessions run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, from 7:00pm until 8:30pm. Our current locations are Leederville, Melville, Beechboro, Subiaco, Shenton Park, Darlington, Gosnells and Midland. Usually there are between 12 and 20 people at each session.
Our music sessions are more structured than what one might expect at a typical jam session, in that they rely on the abilities of a Music Facilitator to lead and shape the music, and to keep everyone engaged and involved at a meaningful level.
Who is Catch Music looking for?
We are looking for people who have: solid musical skills on at least one musical instrument, a basic understanding of musical theory, confident interpersonal skills, the ability to lead and inspire a diverse group of people, and a desire to see music being enjoyed by all members of our community, no matter what age or ability.
What's in it for me?
In terms of financial remuneration, Catch Music is able to offer $80 per 90-minute session, one session per week, with a commitment of one school term at a time (i.e. $800 per term).
In terms of other intangible benefits, being a Music Facilitator for one of our community jam sessions will give you a wonderfully challenging and rewarding musical experience, not to mention a great sense of contribution to the community.
